If you’ve heard both “BBL” and “Moxi” thrown around and aren’t sure which one you actually need, you’re not alone. This is one of the questions we hear most at the front desk, and the honest answer is: it depends on what your skin is dealing with.
BBL: Best for Pigment and Redness
BBL uses broadband light to target pigment and vascular concerns close to the surface of the skin, like brown spots, sun damage, and redness. It works by heating those areas so the body can gradually clear them, which is why clients often see noticeably more even tone after just one or two sessions.
One important note: BBL isn’t right for every skin tone. Because it targets pigment directly, it can’t safely be used on darker or deeply tanned skin, since it risks burning the skin. This is something we always assess during a consultation before recommending it.
Moxi: Best for Texture and Tone
Moxi works differently. Instead of targeting pigment with light, it uses a fractional laser to create tiny, controlled treatment zones in the skin, which prompts your body to heal and rebuild collagen. Moxi reduces pigment and improves the skin’s overall tone and texture, and is designed to be performed year-round on all skin types. This makes it a great option if you’re looking for gentle, ongoing maintenance rather than treating one specific concern.
So Which One Do You Need?
A simple way to think about it:
- If your main concern is brown spots, redness, or sun damage, BBL is usually the better starting point (skin tone permitting).
- If you’re looking for overall texture, tone, and a “reset” feeling, Moxi is a gentler, more universal option.
- If you want both, many clients combine the two in the same visit for a more complete result, something we can talk through at your consultation.
A Note on Summer and Laser Treatments
Because BBL targets pigment, it requires some extra care around sun exposure before and after treatment. Moxi tends to be more forgiving with an active summer schedule, which is one reason it’s a popular option for clients who want laser treatments without worrying as much about sun timing. Our laser services page has more on scheduling considerations by season.
The Bottom Line
Neither treatment is “better” than the other, they simply solve different problems. The right one for you depends on your skin tone, your main concern, and how much downtime you’re comfortable with. That’s exactly what we help you figure out during your consultation.
